Where Military Precision Meets Outdoor Performance
We specialize in
precision-machined knives and gear, made for those who live life outdoors — whether you're in the field, on the hunt, chasing fish, or blazing off-road trails. Every piece is crafted with the mindset of a
Marine veteran and the hands of a seasoned maker —
custom tactical tools you can depend on when it counts.
Our name pays tribute to Kansas' historic identity as a Free State — born during the turbulent pre-Civil War era when bold men and women stood their ground against slavery and tyranny. The Free Staters fought not just for land, but for liberty and principle — a spirit that still defines the people of Kansas today. At Free State Machining, we channel that same spirit of freedom, independence, and unyielding resolve into every custom knife, every part, every product we make.
Before the rails, before the roads, millions of American bison roamed the plains of Kansas. They were the lifeblood of the land — a symbol of strength, endurance, and survival. Hunted nearly to extinction in the 19th century, the bison became a stark reminder of what happens when balance is lost. Today, the bison stands not only as a symbol of the American frontier but also of resilience and restoration.
At
Free State Machining, we draw inspiration from the American bison — wild, durable, and unyielding — just like the
tactical knives and
outdoor gear we make and the people we make them for.
From the Field to the Frontier
Free State Machining is more than a brand — it's a reflection of a lifestyle: one that honors service, history, and the untamed American spirit. Whether you're on duty, off the grid, or anywhere in between, our **precision-machined knives** and gear are built to perform — no excuses.
D2 tool steel is a high-carbon, high-chromium air-hardening steel known for its excellent wear resistance, hardness, and durability. It belongs to the cold work tool steel family and is commonly used in applications where tools are subjected to high levels of abrasion and wear.
Characteristics of
D2 Tool Steel
-
High Hardness: Can be hardened to around
60–62 HRC
- Excellent Wear Resistance: Due to its high carbon (around 1.5%) and chromium (around 12%) content
- Moderate Toughness: More brittle than some other tool steels like A2 or O1
- Good Dimensional Stability: Maintains shape during heat treatment
- Corrosion Resistance: Higher than most tool steels, but not truly stainless
History of D2 Steel
D2 tool steel emerged in the early 20th century as a solution to the growing demand for steels that could withstand high levels of wear in industrial tooling. Its development was tied to advancements in alloy technology and the increased use of precision tooling in manufacturing, especially in die and mold work.
Industry Uses for D2 Steel
D2 steel is widely used in:
- Punches and dies
- Industrial cutting tools
- High-end custom knives
- Forming tools
- Shear blades
- Plastic molds
